Stress headache on one side of the head: what to know

Short answer
A stress-related headache on one side can come from muscle tension, migraine, dehydration, or another condition, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a one-sided stress headache may mean
Stress can tighten the muscles of the scalp, jaw, neck, and shoulders. That discomfort may be felt more strongly on one side, especially after long screen use, poor sleep, teeth clenching, or a prolonged demanding task. Stress can also trigger migraine, which may cause throbbing pain, nausea, or sensitivity to light and sound. A blocked nose or facial pressure can occur with Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis; fever or body aches may point towards a Common Cold, COVID-19, or Dengue Fever. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can also cause headache. A headache does not identify its cause by itself.
What you can do now
Move to a quiet, cool place and drink water. Relax your jaw, lower your shoulders, and use gentle neck movement rather than forceful stretching. Take a screen break, eat if you have missed a meal, and keep a note of the start time, side, severity, triggers, sleep, fluids, and other symptoms. A cool or warm compress may help. If you use an over-the-counter pain medicine, follow its label and check with a pharmacist if you have a medical condition, take other medicines, or need it repeatedly. Frequent headaches deserve a review, because repeated painkiller use can itself maintain headaches.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for a sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, a seizure, loss of vision, a stiff neck with fever, or a headache after a significant head injury. Seek prompt assessment for a new one-sided headache that keeps worsening, repeatedly returns, or comes with persistent vomiting, eye pain, or a painful red eye. Arrange a routine appointment if headaches are affecting work, sleep, or daily activities.
Questions for your doctor
Could this pattern fit tension headache or migraine? Do my medicines, eyesight, jaw clenching, blood pressure, or sleep need checking? What symptoms should make me seek urgent help, and which treatment should I avoid?

Questions people ask
Can stress cause pain on only one side of the head?
Yes. Stress-related muscle tension may feel stronger on one side, and stress can trigger migraine, but a new or changing pattern should be assessed.
When is a one-sided headache an emergency?
Seek urgent help for sudden extreme pain, weakness, confusion, speech or vision changes, seizure, fainting, fever with stiff neck, or a significant head injury.
