Stress fracture in the ulna: what to know

How the structures involved in Stress Fracture differ from normal

Short answer

A stress fracture in the ulna is an overuse injury of one forearm bone, often causing focused pain that increases with repeated loading or gripping.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Location
The little-finger side of the forearm
Provoking loads
Throwing, gripping, lifting or repeated wrist and forearm work
Assessment
Examination with imaging chosen according to symptoms

What it means

The ulna runs along the little-finger side of the forearm. Repetitive throwing, racket sports, gymnastics, weight training or forceful gripping can load it repeatedly. Pain may be felt at a specific spot and can worsen when you rotate the forearm, grip, lift or lean through the hand. Mild swelling or tenderness may occur, while weakness can make ordinary tasks uncomfortable. A clinician will examine the wrist, elbow and forearm because nearby muscles, tendons and joints can produce similar symptoms. Initial X-rays may not show an early stress injury, so further imaging or review may be needed.

What to do next

Stop the provoking sport, lifting or gripping and arrange an assessment. Keep the wrist and forearm in comfortable positions, but do not repeatedly press the sore spot or try to prove that it is better. A splint or activity restriction may be advised; use it as directed. Rehabilitation can later restore motion, grip control and strength before throwing or resistance work returns in stages. Discuss training technique, equipment and recovery time. If bone health is a concern, your clinician may consider evaluation for Vitamin D Deficiency and whether Vitamin D Supplementation is appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for pinpoint forearm pain that persists, returns with activity or limits grip and rotation. Get urgent help for a visibly deformed arm, rapidly increasing swelling, inability to move the wrist or fingers, new numbness, a cold or pale hand, or pain after a significant injury. These signs need immediate assessment even if the original discomfort began gradually.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the ulna itself is tender, whether imaging should be repeated, what lifting and gripping limits apply, and how long protection is expected. Ask which forearm exercises are acceptable and what must happen before sport resumes.

Questions people ask

Can an ulnar stress fracture cause wrist pain?

Yes. Pain may be felt toward the wrist because the ulna extends into that region, but the source still needs examination.

Should I keep training the other arm?

Only after discussing it with a clinician, because gripping, bracing or compensating can still load the painful forearm.
