What should you know about a stress ECG machine?

Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin of the chest and sometimes the limbs. Wires connect them to a monitor that displays and records the heart rhythm. A blood pressure cuff and symptom checks may be used during the assessment. The test is supervised, and the workload is adjusted or stopped if symptoms or concerning changes occur.

The machine records electrical activity; it does not itself explain every cause of chest discomfort, breathlessness or palpitations. Results are interpreted with your symptoms, examination and medical history. A standard Electrocardiogram may be performed at rest, while a stress assessment observes the heart under controlled demand.

Follow the clinic's instructions about meals, caffeine, clothing and medicines. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes if walking or cycling is planned, and tell the team about pregnancy, mobility limits, recent illness, skin sensitivity or medicines that affect heart rate. Do not apply oily creams to areas where electrodes will be placed.

During the test, report chest pressure, unusual breathlessness, dizziness, leg pain or any symptom that feels different from normal exertion. You can ask the team what activity will be used, how long monitoring continues and when you may resume usual activities.

A test appointment is not a substitute for urgent care. Call emergency services for severe or persistent chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness, confusion or a sustained racing or irregular heartbeat. If symptoms begin before the appointment, contact a clinician promptly and explain what is happening rather than exercising to reproduce them.

Ask why the test is recommended, whether a resting ECG or another assessment is also needed, which medicines to take, and what symptoms should stop the test. Ask how results will be explained and when follow-up is planned. Tell the clinician about previous heart tests, fainting, chest symptoms and your usual exercise tolerance.
