Short answer

Stress can leave you feeling exhausted by disturbing sleep, increasing mental strain, and keeping the body in a state of alertness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How stress and exhaustion can be connected

Exhaustion may feel like low energy, poor concentration, irritability, or reduced motivation. Stress can make it harder to fall asleep, cause waking during the night, and leave thoughts racing when you are trying to rest. The effort of managing work, family, financial, or health pressures can also make ordinary tasks feel unusually demanding.

Tiredness is not specific to stress. Anaemia, dehydration, COVID-19, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, alcohol use disorder, burnout, and chronic fatigue syndrome can also be associated with fatigue. The pattern matters: note when the problem began, how it affects daily activities, and whether rest improves it.

What may help

Keep a steady sleep and wake routine, make time for regular meals and fluids, and use gentle activity if your energy allows. Break demanding jobs into smaller tasks and schedule brief pauses before you feel depleted. Relaxation breathing, a short walk, or writing down worries can reduce the mental load for some people.

Avoid using alcohol as a way to switch off, because it can disrupt restorative sleep and worsen next-day tiredness. If exhaustion continues, is worsening, or interferes with work, driving, self-care, or relationships, arrange an assessment with a clinician. They can review sleep, medicines, mood, physical symptoms, and possible medical causes.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help for exhaustion with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, new confusion, or thoughts of harming yourself. Prompt medical advice is also appropriate when tiredness comes with unexplained weight change, persistent fever, bleeding, marked weakness, or a major change in sleep or mood.

Do not assume that stress explains every new symptom. A clinician may need to examine you and decide whether tests are useful, particularly when fatigue persists despite rest or follows an illness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What could be contributing to my exhaustion? Could my sleep, medicines, mood, diet, or recent illness be involved? Which symptoms should prompt urgent care? Would an examination or tests help? What level of activity is suitable while I recover?

Questions people ask

Can stress make you feel physically exhausted?

Yes. Ongoing alertness, disrupted sleep, muscle tension, and the mental effort of coping can all leave you feeling physically and mentally drained.

How can you tell whether exhaustion is stress-related?

Look for a relationship with stressful periods and sleep disruption, but remember that fatigue has many possible causes. Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve a clinical assessment.

What is a sensible first step?

Use a regular sleep routine, eat and drink regularly, reduce avoidable demands, and arrange medical advice if the problem affects daily life or does not improve.
