Hoarseness happens when the vocal folds do not vibrate normally. A cold can inflame them, while shouting, singing, smoke, dehydration or reflux can add irritation. A lozenge may lubricate the mouth and throat for a short time, making speaking more comfortable, but it does not remove swelling or treat a structural problem. Hoarse voice can occur with chronic cough and other throat conditions, so the duration and accompanying symptoms matter.

Use the lozenge only as directed on its pack and check its ingredients for allergies or medicine interactions. Rest your voice by speaking gently and briefly; whispering can also strain the voice. Sip water, avoid smoking and dusty air, and keep room air comfortable. Do not repeatedly clear your throat, since that can increase irritation.
