What should you know about strep virus rash?

Streptococcal throat infection can cause a fine, rough rash with sore throat and fever. Viruses can also produce rashes, sometimes with cough, runny nose, mouth sores, or diarrhea. These patterns overlap, so the rash alone does not identify the cause. A clinician may inspect the throat and skin and perform testing when bacterial infection is suspected. Atopic Dermatitis, Contact Dermatitis, Drug Rash, Heat Rash, Intertrigo, Psoriasis, Ringworm, and Scabies are other possible explanations for an itchy or red eruption.

Book an assessment if the rash occurs with a sore throat, fever, or painful swallowing. Follow the treatment selected after examination or testing; antibiotics help bacterial infections but do not treat viral illnesses. Keep fluids nearby, rest, wash hands, avoid sharing cups and towels, and do not pick at affected skin. Record when the rash began and any new medicines or sick contacts, because that history can help distinguish infection from a medication reaction.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids, facial swelling, fainting, confusion, severe dehydration, purple or blistering skin, or a rapidly spreading painful rash. Arrange prompt review if fever continues or the person becomes unusually drowsy.

Ask whether the presentation fits strep, a viral illness, or another rash; whether testing is indicated; how long to limit close contact; and which changes mean the diagnosis or treatment should be reviewed.
