Strep throat without tonsils: what to know

Tonsil surgery removes the tonsils, but it does not remove the lining of the throat or prevent all infections in that area. Strep can therefore cause a sore throat, swallowing pain, fever or swollen glands even when there are no tonsils to see. The appearance may be less typical, so a history of surgery does not settle the diagnosis. A clinician may inspect the throat and consider a swab alongside your symptoms.

Drink enough fluid to keep your mouth moist, rest your voice and choose foods that do not scratch or sting. Follow medicine directions carefully, particularly if you have another health condition or are giving treatment to a child. Avoid using someone else’s antibiotics. Arrange assessment if pain is substantial, symptoms are continuing, or you are unsure whether the illness is strep, another infection or irritation.

Contact a clinician promptly for worsening pain, persistent fever, increasing neck swelling or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek emergency help if you have breathing difficulty, cannot swallow saliva, develop severe one-sided throat pain, or become unusually weak or confused. Tonsil removal does not make these warning signs less urgent.
