How strep throat spreads

The bacteria can pass when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks closely, or shares saliva through drinks, utensils, or kissing. Hands can also move secretions to the nose or mouth after touching contaminated items. People may spread infection before they realise what is wrong. A sore throat with fever, painful swallowing, or swollen neck glands needs assessment; these symptoms do not prove the cause by themselves.

Wash hands often with soap and water, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing cups, cutlery, towels, or toothbrushes. Improve ventilation and keep some distance from household members while unwell. Clean frequently touched surfaces if respiratory secretions have reached them. If a clinician prescribes antibiotics, follow the instructions and ask when normal activities are suitable. Do not give antibiotics to another person or keep them for a future sore throat.

Arrange a GP consultation for a severe or persistent sore throat, fever, painful swallowing, or swollen glands, particularly after close contact with someone diagnosed with strep throat. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow fluids or saliva, drooling, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Household contacts who develop symptoms should seek their own advice rather than using someone else’s medicine.

Ask whether your symptoms need testing, how long to avoid close contact, and what to do if a household member becomes unwell. Mention recent exposure, your temperature, swallowing ability, and any medicine allergies.
