What does strep throat look like?

The throat may look red, and the tonsils may be enlarged with small white patches or streaks. Pain when swallowing, fever and tender glands at the front of the neck can occur. Some people have a fine rash or small red spots on the roof of the mouth. Appearance is not enough to identify the cause: Tonsillitis and viral infections can create similar redness or coating, while a cough or runny nose may point toward a viral illness. Testing may be needed.

Use good lighting and a mirror if you look at your throat, but do not scrape patches or share photographs as a substitute for assessment. Drink regularly, choose foods that are easy to swallow and avoid smoking. Arrange a GP Consultation when symptoms are pronounced, arrive suddenly, or include fever and swollen glands. A clinician can decide whether a throat test is useful and whether Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate.

Get urgent help if you struggle to breathe or swallow saliva, drool, become dehydrated, develop a muffled voice, or have rapidly worsening one-sided throat swelling. Seek prompt review for worsening pain, persistent fever, or a rash with significant illness. Do not wait for the throat to look dramatic before seeking care.
