Strep throat and flu

Strep throat is caused by bacteria and often centres on a sudden sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, and tender neck glands. Flu is caused by a virus and commonly brings a broader illness with chills, muscle aches, headache, cough, and marked fatigue. Symptoms overlap, so a cough or runny nose may point toward a viral illness but cannot replace an assessment. A person can have more than one infection, particularly when symptoms change or intensify.

Rest, drink fluids, and stay home while fever or significant symptoms continue. Do not use antibiotics for flu unless a clinician identifies a bacterial infection requiring them. If strep throat is suspected, arrange a GP Consultation; the clinician may examine your throat and decide whether testing or Antibiotic Treatment is suitable. Avoid sharing drinks and wash hands, especially around children, older adults, or people with long-term conditions.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, severe dehydration, blue or grey lips, or inability to swallow fluids. Arrange prompt review when fever persists, throat pain is worsening, symptoms improve and then return, or severe weakness makes normal activities difficult. Children who are unusually sleepy or not drinking need timely medical advice.

Ask whether your pattern is more consistent with strep throat, flu, tonsillitis, or another infection; whether a test is useful; and which treatments are safe with your existing medicines. Share the onset of cough, fever, throat pain, and body aches.
