Strep A and laryngitis

Laryngitis affects the voice box and can make the voice hoarse, weak, or absent. Strep A usually affects the throat and tonsils, causing pain on swallowing, fever, swollen glands, or inflamed tonsils. These problems can occur together, but hoarseness alone does not identify Strep A.

A common cold, acid reflux, dehydration, smoke, and repeated voice use can irritate the voice box. A clinician may inspect the throat, ask about breathing and swallowing, and decide whether a Strep A test or other assessment is useful. Antibiotics are not helpful for laryngitis caused by a virus.

Rest your voice by speaking gently and briefly; whispering can also strain the voice. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and smoky rooms, and use a humidified environment if it feels soothing. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. A pharmacist can advise on suitable pain relief.

Arrange a GP consultation if hoarseness persists, keeps returning, or affects work. Mention reflux symptoms, frequent voice use, recent infection, and any prescribed medicines. Children with breathing or swallowing changes need prompt assessment.

Seek urgent help for noisy or difficult breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, rapidly increasing throat swelling, severe dehydration, or a child who is struggling to breathe. Contact a clinician promptly if fever and throat pain are worsening or you cannot take fluids.

Ask whether your symptoms fit laryngitis, whether Strep A testing is indicated, how long to rest your voice, which medicines are suitable, and what changes should trigger an urgent review.
