Short answer

A Storz otoscope is a clinical examination device that helps a healthcare professional view the ear canal and eardrum, but it does not by itself diagnose every ear problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the instrument does

An otoscope combines a handle, light source and viewing head with a clean speculum that fits at the entrance of the ear canal. A clinician uses it to look for wax, irritation, discharge, swelling, a foreign object or changes in the eardrum. The findings are interpreted alongside symptoms such as pain, reduced hearing, fever, dizziness or discharge; a normal view does not explain every cause of ear discomfort.

How an examination works

You usually sit still while the clinician gently positions the outer ear and brings the instrument to the canal opening. Tell them if the ear is painful, recently injured or has had surgery. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects before the visit, because they can push wax deeper or irritate the canal. A GP consultation can assess common ear symptoms, while a child health consultation may be adapted for a young child.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment for persistent ear pain, new hearing change, discharge, fever, repeated infections or a suspected foreign object. Seek urgent care after a significant injury, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, or swelling and redness behind the ear. Never force an instrument into an ear or attempt to remove a lodged object yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what was visible, whether wax or infection is present, whether hearing should be checked, and which symptoms should prompt follow-up. For a child, ask how to keep the ear examination comfortable and what signs require an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Does an otoscope examination hurt?

It is often brief, but an inflamed or injured ear can be tender; tell the clinician immediately if positioning causes pain.

Can an otoscope find every cause of hearing loss?

No. Some hearing problems need hearing tests or other assessment beyond looking at the ear canal and eardrum.
