What should you know about a Storz arthroscope?

Storz is a medical-device manufacturer; an arthroscope is the slender viewing instrument used in arthroscopy. The scope has a light and camera, and its image is displayed on a monitor. Depending on the joint and the planned procedure, the surgeon may use separate small instruments through nearby openings to inspect cartilage, ligaments, tendons or the joint lining.

The device helps the surgeon see the joint directly, but it does not by itself decide whether tissue needs repair. The operation, anaesthesia, recovery plan and expected findings depend on the joint problem and your general health.

Ask which joint is being examined, what treatment may be performed at the same time, and whether you will go home the same day. Follow the surgical team’s instructions about medicines, fasting, wound care and arranging transport. Afterward, use the prescribed activity limits and exercises; swelling and soreness can affect movement while the tissues settle. Knee, shoulder, hip and elbow procedures have different rehabilitation needs.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, marked swelling, or a wound that opens. Seek urgent help for new severe shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or a limb that becomes cold, pale, numb or suddenly weak.
