How to reduce urinary urgency

Short answer
To reduce urinary urgency, avoid bladder irritants, space fluids sensibly, treat constipation, and arrange a review if symptoms persist or hurt.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Keep a diary
- Record drinks, urgency, pain and night-time visits.
- Avoid self-treatment
- Do not take leftover antibiotics.
Possible reasons for urgency
Urinary urgency is a sudden, difficult-to-delay need to pass urine. It may occur with a Urinary Tract Infection, bladder irritation, constipation or concentrated urine. In people with a prostate, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can obstruct flow and leave the bladder working harder. Prostatitis may cause urgency with pelvic discomfort, painful urination or fever. The symptom can have more than one contributor, so urgency alone does not identify the cause.
Helpful daily measures
Drink regularly rather than taking large amounts at once, unless a clinician has given you a different fluid plan. Reduce caffeine, fizzy drinks and alcohol if they trigger urgency. Do not repeatedly hold urine for long periods, but gradually lengthen toilet intervals only if this is comfortable. Address constipation, because a full bowel can press on the bladder. Keep a record of drinks, urgency, leakage, pain, urine colour and night-time visits. Do not use leftover antibiotics; testing may be needed to choose treatment.
When to get checked
Arrange medical advice if urgency lasts, keeps returning, causes leakage, interrupts sleep or comes with burning, unusual discharge or a weak stream. Seek same-day care for fever, chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, visible blood in urine or difficulty passing urine. Severe illness, confusion or inability to urinate needs urgent assessment.
Questions to take along
Could this be a Urinary Tract Infection, Prostatitis or prostate enlargement? Should my urine be tested? Could constipation, caffeine or another medicine be contributing? What bladder-training or pelvic-floor support is suitable for my symptoms?

Questions people ask
Should I drink less to control urgency?
Drinking too little can make urine concentrated and irritating. Regular, sensible fluids are usually more helpful unless your clinician advises restriction.
When can urgency indicate infection?
Urgency with burning, cloudy or bloody urine, pelvic discomfort or fever can occur with a Urinary Tract Infection and should be assessed.
