What should you know about stopping muscle cramps?

Short answer
To stop a muscle cramp, gently stretch and massage the tight muscle, use warmth, and address possible fluid, activity or medicine triggers.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a cramp is
A muscle cramp is a sudden, involuntary tightening that can make a muscle feel hard and painful. It may follow strenuous activity, prolonged sitting, changes in fluid balance or an irritated muscle. Night cramps often affect the calf or foot. Repeated cramps can also occur with conditions such as [Dehydration](/conditions/dehydration/), [Hypothyroidism](/conditions/hypothyroidism/) or [Chronic Kidney Disease](/conditions/chronic-kidney-disease/), so the pattern and other symptoms matter.
Relief and prevention
Stop the activity and slowly straighten the affected limb. For a calf cramp, pull the toes gently toward your face while keeping the knee straight if comfortable; stand and place weight on the leg only if safe. Massage the area and try warmth from a shower or heat pack. Once it settles, drink fluids and resume activity gradually. Warm up before exercise, stretch regularly, and avoid sudden increases in training. A [Muscle Strain](/conditions/muscle-strain/) can need a different approach, particularly if pain began with an injury.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment when cramps are frequent, severe, spreading, disturbing sleep, or accompanied by weakness, numbness, swelling or skin colour change. Seek urgent care for a painful swollen limb, sudden loss of strength, or cramping with chest pain or breathing difficulty. Persistent symptoms during walking may need evaluation for circulation problems such as [Peripheral Arterial Disease](/conditions/peripheral-arterial-disease/). Do not start mineral or vitamin supplements without checking the cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your medicines, hydration, exercise routine or health conditions could contribute, whether blood tests are useful, and which stretching plan fits your symptoms.
