Short answer

A stomach ulcer can reduce appetite because pain, nausea, or discomfort may make eating less appealing; arrange medical advice if it persists or is severe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Possible effects
Pain, nausea, early fullness, or indigestion can reduce interest in food.
Urgent warning
Blood in vomit or black stools needs urgent medical help.

What the symptom can mean

A peptic ulcer is an open sore in the lining of the stomach or upper intestine. Stomach pain, burning, early fullness, nausea, or indigestion can change how much you want to eat. Loss of appetite is not specific to an ulcer, so it does not by itself identify the cause. Gastritis, gastroenteritis, viral illness, emotional distress, and other conditions can also affect appetite.

A clinician may ask about pain timing, vomiting, bowel movements, medicines, and any unplanned weight change. Anti-inflammatory pain medicines and infection with Helicobacter pylori are common issues they may consider when assessing an ulcer.

What you can do now

Take small, regular meals and choose foods that feel manageable rather than forcing a large portion. Sip fluids regularly, particularly if nausea is present. Avoid smoking and notice whether alcohol, very spicy foods, or anti-inflammatory pain medicines worsen symptoms. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice; ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a medicine could irritate the stomach and how an ulcer should be treated.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical appointment when poor appetite continues, returns repeatedly, or comes with persistent upper-abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or unintended weight loss. Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, sudden severe abdominal pain, fainting, or marked weakness, because these can signal bleeding or another complication.

Questions for your doctor

Could an ulcer, gastritis, or a medicine explain my appetite change? Do I need testing for Helicobacter pylori? Which pain relievers should I avoid, and what symptoms would mean I need urgent care?

Questions people ask

Does loss of appetite prove I have an ulcer?

No. Appetite loss has several possible causes and needs to be considered with your other symptoms.

Can I take an anti-inflammatory painkiller?

Ask a clinician or pharmacist first, because some anti-inflammatory pain medicines can irritate or worsen an ulcer.
