Stomach flu vomiting without diarrhoea

Gastroenteritis may begin with nausea, repeated vomiting, stomach cramps, fever, or loss of appetite before diarrhoea appears, and some people never develop diarrhoea. Food irritation, migraine, medication effects, pregnancy, or a problem outside the digestive system can also cause vomiting. The pattern, recent contacts, food history, pain, and other symptoms help a clinician narrow the cause. Rotavirus infection is one possible infectious cause, especially in children.

After vomiting, pause briefly, then try tiny, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Avoid taking large gulps, which may trigger more vomiting. When fluids stay down, gradually add bland foods such as toast, rice, bananas, soup, or plain yoghurt if tolerated. Rest, wash hands with soap and water, and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Do not give children anti-vomiting medicine unless a healthcare professional recommends it.

Get urgent medical help for severe belly pain, a swollen abdomen, confusion, fainting, blood or green material in vomit, or a severe headache with a stiff neck. Contact a clinician when vomiting continues, fluids will not stay down, urination becomes sparse, or the person is very young, older, pregnant, or living with a condition that raises dehydration risk.
