Is stomach flu contagious?

The term stomach flu usually describes gastroenteritis, not influenza. Viruses such as norovirus or rotavirus can pass from an infected person to another person when tiny particles reach the mouth. This may happen after using the bathroom, cleaning vomit, changing a nappy, preparing food, or touching a contaminated object. Vomiting and diarrhoea can also spread germs around nearby surfaces. Symptoms may include nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and fever.

A person may remain infectious while symptoms are present and for a period after feeling better. The exact time depends on the germ, so careful hygiene should continue after recovery.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and running water after using the toilet, changing nappies, or caring for someone who is unwell, and before handling food. Alcohol hand gel may not work well against some stomach viruses. Do not prepare food for other people while ill or soon after symptoms stop. Clean soiled surfaces promptly, wash contaminated laundry separately when possible, and avoid sharing towels, utensils, and cups.
