How long is stomach flu contagious?

Gastroenteritis viruses can pass from an infected person to hands, surfaces, food or shared bathroom areas. Vomit and stool may contain virus even when a person feels better, and some infections can continue spreading after recovery. The exact contagious period depends on the cause, age and health of the person. Rotavirus infection can be particularly significant around babies and young children.

Stay home while actively vomiting or having diarrhoea and follow local workplace, school or childcare guidance before returning. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet, changing nappies and cleaning vomit; hand gel may not work well against every stomach virus. Do not prepare food for others while ill. Clean toilet handles, taps and frequently touched surfaces, wash soiled laundry separately, and avoid sharing towels.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are not easing, fluid intake is poor, or dehydration signs such as very little urine, dizziness or marked sleepiness appear. Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Use extra caution with infants, older adults and people with weakened immunity.
