Stomach flu and flu at the same time

The term stomach flu usually describes gastroenteritis, an infection or irritation of the digestive tract; it is not the same virus as influenza. Gastroenteritis may cause nausea, vomiting, loose stools, abdominal pain, fever and reduced appetite. Influenza more often causes a sudden fever, chills, cough, sore throat, headache, marked tiredness and body aches. When symptoms overlap, it can be difficult to tell which illness is responsible for a particular symptom. Rotavirus infection is one possible cause of gastroenteritis, especially in children. The main concern from vomiting and diarrhoea is dehydration, while influenza can become more serious when it affects breathing or causes profound weakness.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink; large amounts at once can worsen vomiting. Rest, keep food simple when appetite returns, and avoid preparing food for other people while unwell. Wash hands with soap and water after using the bathroom and before eating, and clean frequently touched surfaces. Keep track of urination, alertness, fluid intake, temperature and breathing. Ask a clinician or pharmacist before taking medicines if you are pregnant, treating a child, have kidney disease, or take regular medicines. Do not use antibiotics unless a clinician has identified a reason for them.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt medical assessment is also appropriate for very little or dark urine, a dry mouth with worsening dizziness, severe or persistent abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or a fever that concerns you. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with long-term conditions can become unwell more quickly and should have a lower threshold for contacting a clinician. If symptoms are worsening rather than settling, arrange medical advice.

Ask whether your symptoms fit gastroenteritis, influenza, another infection or more than one cause. Discuss whether testing, prescription treatment or a medication review is useful, and ask how much fluid to take if vomiting continues. Mention your age, pregnancy status, long-term conditions, regular medicines, recent travel, sick contacts and the time symptoms began.
