Stomach bug treatment at home

A stomach bug usually describes gastroenteritis, irritation of the stomach and bowel that can cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever or loss of appetite. Fluid leaves the body through vomiting and loose stools, so dehydration can become the main concern. Symptoms may occur together or separately, and a person can feel weak even when the illness is settling.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting makes drinking difficult, pause briefly and try smaller sips more often. When appetite returns, choose easy-to-digest foods and increase portions gradually. Rest, wash hands with soap and water, clean shared bathroom surfaces and avoid preparing food for others while unwell. Do not start antibiotics unless a clinician prescribes them; they do not treat viral gastroenteritis.

Seek urgent medical advice for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or a high or persistent fever. Get advice sooner for a baby, older adult, pregnancy, or someone with a long-term illness, because dehydration may develop more quickly. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms are worsening or not beginning to improve.
