Short answer

For short-term stomach bloating relief, gentle movement, slow eating, fluids, and avoiding fizzy drinks may reduce trapped gas.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why bloating happens

Bloating is a sensation of fullness or pressure that may come with visible abdominal expansion, belching, or wind. It can follow swallowed air, a large meal, constipation, or a food that your body handles poorly. The quickest useful step depends on the trigger, so notice whether the discomfort follows eating, bowel changes, or a particular ingredient.

Recurrent bloating can occur with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, lactose intolerance, or another digestive condition. A single episode does not identify its cause. Read more about Bloating if you want to compare common patterns.

Steps for relief now

Take a gentle walk, loosen tight clothing, and sip water rather than gulping it. Eat slowly at the next meal and pause between bites. Avoid chewing gum, drinking through a straw, and fizzy beverages for now because they can increase swallowed air. If constipation is present, fluids, movement, and gradual fibre from ordinary foods may help.

Do not repeatedly press hard on a painful abdomen or take someone else’s prescription. A pharmacist can explain whether an over-the-counter product is suitable for your symptoms and other medicines. For recurring food-related symptoms, Nutrition Counselling may help you test changes without unnecessary restriction.

When home measures are not enough

Get urgent care for sudden severe pain, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood in stool or vomit, fainting, fever, or inability to pass stool or gas. Arrange a medical review when bloating keeps returning, lasts despite simple changes, wakes you, or comes with unintentional weight loss or persistent diarrhoea.

Questions people ask

Can bloating disappear quickly?

Mild bloating may settle as gas moves through the digestive tract, although the time varies with the cause.

Should I lie down to relieve bloating?

Gentle movement is often more useful than staying still, unless movement worsens pain or you feel unwell.
