Stomach bloating due to a liver problem: what to know

Bloating commonly fluctuates with meals, gas, and bowel movements. Liver-related fluid build-up, called ascites, may make the abdomen progressively larger, feel tense, and be accompanied by ankle swelling, breathlessness, easy bruising, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, confusion, or marked tiredness. These symptoms need medical assessment; bloating alone does not show that liver disease is present.

Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fever with swelling, vomiting blood, black stools, new confusion, faintness, severe breathlessness, or rapidly increasing abdominal size. Yellowing skin, swelling of the legs, or reduced alertness also warrant prompt medical advice, especially with known liver disease.
