Stomach Ache and Body Ache: What to Know

The meaning depends on where the pain is, how it began, and whether fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, rash, urinary symptoms, or unusual tiredness are present. A symptom combination cannot identify one diagnosis on its own.

Viral illnesses such as influenza or COVID-19 can cause general body aches alongside digestive symptoms. In regions where they occur, malaria, dengue fever, and brucellosis can also cause fever and aches, sometimes with stomach discomfort. These conditions are assessed using the full symptom pattern, travel or exposure history, and an examination.

Persistent, widespread aches with fatigue may occur in fibromyalgia, while an underactive thyroid can contribute to muscle aches, constipation, and low energy. Sudden severe abdominal pain, however, needs separate attention even when body aches are also present.

Rest, take small frequent sips of fluid, and choose light foods if eating feels comfortable. Record your temperature, the location and severity of the stomach pain, bowel changes, and any medicines taken. Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity while you feel unwell.

Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms do not settle, keep returning, or interfere with drinking and normal activities. Tell the clinician about recent travel, insect bites, unsafe food or water, contact with sick people, and animal or unpasteurised dairy exposure.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a rigid or markedly swollen abdomen, fainting, confusion, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, black stool, or inability to keep fluids down.

Prompt assessment is also needed for a high or persistent fever, a new widespread rash, yellowing of the skin or eyes, very little urine, or marked weakness. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and people with weakened immunity may need earlier advice.

Ask which causes fit the timing and location of your pain, whether testing is needed, which warning signs should change your urgency, and which fluids, foods, or medicines are suitable for you. Mention every prescription, supplement, and recent dose of pain medicine.
