Stiff, painful hands and fingers: what to know

Short answer
Stiff, painful hands and fingers can result from joint irritation, tendon catching, or connective-tissue change, so the timing and distribution of stiffness are useful clues.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Describe
- Note swelling, clicking, locking, morning stiffness, and which joints are involved.
- Protect
- Use larger handles and alternate repetitive hand tasks.
What may be involved
Pain at finger joints with activity may occur with hand osteoarthritis. Stiffness affecting several joints, particularly with swelling and prolonged morning difficulty, can occur with rheumatoid arthritis and deserves assessment. A finger that catches, clicks, or locks during bending may fit trigger finger. A thickened cord in the palm that gradually pulls a finger toward it can occur with Dupuytren's contracture. These patterns are not interchangeable, and hand pain does not by itself identify a particular condition.
Ways to protect hand function
Keep the fingers moving gently through comfortable ranges and avoid repeatedly gripping tools or carrying loads that flare pain. Warm water can make morning movement easier for some people. Use larger handles, alternate tasks, and take short rest breaks rather than stopping all hand use. Do not force a locked finger straight. A clinician or hand therapist can check joints, tendons, grip, and sensation and suggest splinting or exercises when appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help after a significant injury if the finger looks deformed, becomes pale or blue, or cannot be moved or felt normally. Arrange a review for persistent swelling, warmth, repeated locking, progressive loss of movement, numbness, or symptoms affecting several joints. Sudden severe pain with redness or fever also needs prompt advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the problem seems joint-based or tendon-based, whether hand therapy could help, how to modify gripping tasks, and which changes mean you should return sooner.

Questions people ask
Why are my fingers stiff in the morning?
Morning stiffness can accompany joint inflammation or irritation, but its duration and associated swelling help guide assessment.
Should I force a locked finger open?
No. Forcing it may aggravate an irritated tendon or joint; seek advice if locking repeats.
