Stiff neck and body aches: what should you know?

Influenza, COVID-19 and other infections can cause body aches, tiredness and neck discomfort. Malaria or dengue fever should be considered after relevant travel or mosquito exposure, particularly when fever, chills, sweats, rash or unusual bleeding occurs. Brucellosis can follow contact with infected animals or unpasteurised dairy. Fibromyalgia may cause widespread pain, poor sleep and fatigue over a longer period, while hypothyroidism can contribute to muscle aches, sluggishness and feeling unusually cold. A recent workout, minor injury or long period in one position can strain the neck and other muscles. The combination and course matter more than any single symptom.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and choose light activity as your strength returns. Gentle neck movement can prevent guarding, but avoid deep massage or forceful stretching when pain is acute. Note your temperature, travel history, insect exposure, new medicines, rash and whether joints are swollen. Use familiar pain relief only when safe for you and according to the label; ask a pharmacist if you have kidney, stomach, liver or bleeding problems, or take other medicines.

Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, seizure, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, breathing difficulty, severe dehydration or a rapidly spreading rash. Seek urgent advice for fever with pronounced neck stiffness, severe headache, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding or marked drowsiness. Arrange a review if aches persist, recur, or are accompanied by swollen joints, weight change or ongoing fatigue.
