Short answer

Stiff fingers during sleep may reflect prolonged hand position, swelling, or pressure on irritated joints and nerves.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What nighttime stiffness can indicate

While you sleep, the hand may stay curled or bent for a long period. Fluid can collect around sensitive tissues, and a wrist position that compresses a nerve may cause stiffness with tingling or numbness. A clicking or catching finger points toward a tendon problem, while a firm cord or a finger gradually drawing toward the palm can occur with Dupuytren's Contracture. Hand Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can also cause stiffness, although their patterns and other symptoms differ. Finger Stiffness is easier to understand when you record whether symptoms affect one or both hands, whether shaking or changing position helps, and how long the feeling lasts after waking.

Ways to make nights more comfortable

Try resting the hand in a relaxed, neutral position rather than tightly curled. Avoid sleeping with your wrist folded under your body. On waking, warm the hand with comfortable water or a warm cloth, then move each finger slowly through an easy range. A clinician may recommend a night splint for a specific problem, but an ill-fitting splint can increase pressure or swelling, so seek guidance before using one. Keep a brief symptom diary and mention repetitive daytime gripping, recent injury, or new medicines at your review.

When nighttime symptoms need review

Get urgent care for sudden weakness, persistent loss of sensation, a pale or blue hand, severe swelling, or a finger that cannot be moved after an injury. Arrange a clinical assessment when symptoms repeatedly wake you, numbness lasts after changing position, or morning movement is becoming more limited. Prompt review is also sensible with warmth, marked redness, fever, or a finger that locks in a bent position.

Useful appointment questions

Ask whether your symptoms fit joint irritation, tendon catching, or nerve pressure; which sleeping position is safest; and whether a night splint is appropriate. Ask how to distinguish expected morning stiffness from a change that needs examination.
