Sticky watery eyes: what to know

Watery eyes with sticky discharge may happen when the eye surface is irritated or inflamed. Conjunctivitis can cause redness, watering, crusting, and discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis often affects both eyes and may bring itching, while infection can spread through contaminated hands, towels, or cosmetics.

Eye discharge can also occur with a blocked tear duct or another eye problem. The colour and amount of discharge do not diagnose the cause by themselves, so persistent or troublesome symptoms deserve an assessment.

Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes. Gently clean crusts with clean cotton and lukewarm water, using a fresh piece for each eye. Do not share towels, pillows, eye makeup, or contact lenses, and pause contact lens wear until symptoms have settled and a clinician says it is safe.

Avoid rubbing your eyes. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable treatment after considering whether allergy, irritation, or infection is more likely.

Get urgent eye care for severe pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, injury, marked swelling, or a red eye with headache or nausea. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms affect a newborn, worsen quickly, or do not begin to improve.
