What should you know about sticky dandruff on scalp?

Dandruff can produce white or yellowish flakes, especially where scalp oil makes scale adhere. Seborrheic dermatitis may cause thicker scale with redness, itch, or greasy patches around the hairline, eyebrows, ears, or nose. Scratching can irritate the skin and make flaking more noticeable. A clinician may consider psoriasis, contact irritation from hair products, or another scalp condition when the scale is very thick, painful, spreading, or associated with hair loss.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle cleanser and follow directions for a medicated shampoo if one is recommended. Allow the lather to remain on the scalp for the instructed time before rinsing. Avoid picking at attached scale, harsh scraping, and heavy oils or styling products that worsen buildup. A dermatologist can select a medicated shampoo or topical antifungal treatment according to the appearance of the scalp and any irritation. Keep product changes gradual so a reaction is easier to identify.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for bleeding, pus, marked tenderness, swollen areas, crusting, or sudden hair loss. Seek prompt care if a rash reaches the eyes or if facial swelling or breathing trouble occurs after a product. If careful washing and an appropriate over-the-counter routine do not settle the sticky scale, an examination can distinguish dandruff from seborrheic dermatitis or another cause.
