What should you know about stevens rash?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is an uncommon but severe reaction, often linked to a medicine and sometimes to an infection. It can affect the skin as well as moist linings such as the mouth, eyes and genitals. Early features may include fever, feeling unwell, skin pain, red or dusky patches, and a rash that spreads. Blisters, skin peeling, crusted lips, painful swallowing or sore eyes are especially concerning. This pattern is different from a mild, itchy rash alone, and it cannot be safely diagnosed from a photograph or by trying several creams at home.

A clinician may need to review recently started or changed medicines, examine the skin and mucosal surfaces, and arrange hospital-level care when this reaction is suspected. Do not restart a suspected medicine unless the treating team specifically tells you to.

If a rapidly worsening rash appears after starting or changing a medicine, seek emergency medical help immediately. Take the medicine packets or an up-to-date list of every prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement with you. Note when each medicine was started and when the rash or fever began. Avoid applying new products, popping blisters or peeling skin. Keep the affected areas gently protected while travelling for care, and ask someone else to drive if you feel faint or unwell.

Go to an emergency department now for skin pain with a spreading rash, blisters or peeling, fever, facial swelling, mouth sores, trouble swallowing, painful or light-sensitive eyes, genital sores, breathing difficulty, confusion, faintness, or reduced urination. These warning signs can indicate extensive skin or mucosal involvement and dehydration. Even without all of these features, a new rash that is worsening quickly after a medicine needs same-day assessment.

Ask which medicine or infection may have triggered the reaction, which medicines should be avoided in future, how the reaction will be recorded in your medical record, and whether an allergy or dermatology referral is needed. Ask what symptoms should prompt immediate return after discharge, especially changes affecting the eyes, mouth or ability to drink.
