Steroids for tonsillitis: what to know

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils and may be caused by a virus or bacteria. A clinician might consider a steroid when swelling or pain makes swallowing especially difficult. Steroids reduce inflammation; they do not kill bacteria, so they are not a replacement for antibiotic treatment when a bacterial infection needs that medicine.

Sore throat, fever, swollen glands, and earache can occur with throat infections. The pattern and examination help a clinician decide whether testing, supportive care, or treatment for strep throat is appropriate.

Use only the medicine and dose prescribed for you. Drink fluids in small, frequent amounts, choose soft foods, rest, and use simple pain relief only if it is suitable for you. Do not use leftover steroids or antibiotics, and arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are severe, recurrent, or not improving.

If an antibiotic is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes the instruction. Avoid sharing medicines with family members.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, are drooling, have noisy or difficult breathing, rapidly increasing swelling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, or trouble opening your mouth. These features can signal a complication needing prompt assessment.
