What should you know about Steri-Strips over dissolvable stitches?

Dissolvable stitches are designed to lose strength and break down inside the body, so a clinician usually does not need to remove them. Steri-Strips sit on the skin surface and can reduce tension while the outer layer settles. Their presence does not tell you exactly how deep the wound is or how quickly it will heal.

A small stitch end may become visible or work its way toward the surface. Do not pull it or cut it unless the treating clinician instructs you. The wound should still be watched for separation, increasing inflammation, or drainage even when the stitches are dissolvable.

Use the cleaning and bathing plan provided after the procedure. Wash your hands before touching the dressing, avoid peeling the strips, and pat the area dry. Reduce stretching, heavy lifting, and friction that pull on the repaired skin until you receive activity advice for that wound location.

Do not place household glue, antiseptic solutions, or unapproved creams over the strips. If a strip loosens, leave any attached portion in place and ask the treating team whether it needs replacement. Keep a note of the procedure date and any review instructions.

Ask for medical advice if the wound edges open, a stitch end causes persistent irritation, or the area develops worsening pain, warmth, swelling, redness, or cloudy discharge. A dressing that repeatedly becomes wet or soaked should also be discussed with the treating service.
