What should you know about Steri-Strips on top of stitches?

Stitches bring deeper or wider wound edges together. Steri-Strips placed across the surface can reduce tension on the outer skin and protect the line from accidental rubbing. The combination is selected according to the wound's location, depth, skin condition, and the clinician's closure technique.

A strip may look wrinkled, stained at the edge, or partly detached as time passes. These changes can be expected, but a widening gap under the strip, fresh bleeding, or fluid soaking through needs assessment. Do not use the appearance of the strip alone to judge healing.

Wash your hands before checking the area. Keep the strips and stitches dry for the period specified by your clinician, avoid swimming until you have been cleared, and protect the wound from clothing friction. If the area becomes wet, gently pat it dry without lifting the adhesive.

Do not trim, peel, or replace the strips yourself unless you were shown how. Avoid ointments under the adhesive unless prescribed, because moisture and rubbing can loosen it. Keep any follow-up appointment so the stitches can be assessed or removed at the appropriate time.

Contact the treating clinician if the Steri-Strips lift and expose a gap, if a stitch breaks, or if the dressing becomes soaked with blood or drainage. Increasing tenderness, warmth, swelling, redness, pus-like fluid, or an unpleasant smell can signal a wound problem.

Get urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with firm gentle pressure, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever with marked illness, or new numbness or weakness near the repair. Routine wound care and dressing guidance may help with general protection, but it cannot replace an examination when the wound is changing.

Ask whether the strips should remain over the stitches, when the area may get wet, how much movement is safe, and which changes should trigger a review. Confirm the date for stitch removal if the stitches are not dissolvable.
