What should you know about stereotactic radiosurgery for lung cancer?

Despite its name, radiosurgery does not involve a surgical cut. Imaging helps the team define the target, and a treatment system directs beams from several angles. You remain positioned carefully while the equipment delivers the planned dose. The approach is most useful when the target can be clearly located and movement can be managed.

For lung cancer, breathing motion and the location of the tumour near airways, blood vessels or the oesophagus affect planning. Possible effects include tiredness, cough, chest discomfort or inflammation in nearby lung tissue. The team may use repeated scans and clinical reviews to distinguish expected changes from complications. The term Stereotactic Radiosurgery is sometimes used broadly, while CyberKnife and Gamma Knife describe particular technologies or systems.

Tell the team about breathing problems, implanted devices, medicines and previous radiation. Follow instructions about scans, positioning and transport home. Keep a record of cough, breathlessness, chest pain and temperature after treatment. Treatment may be considered alongside other cancer care, depending on the tumour's site and whether cancer has spread, including Brain Metastases.

Call the treatment team urgently for rapidly increasing breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting or a high fever. Emergency services are appropriate for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion or sudden collapse. Do not assume a new cough is simply a treatment effect; describe when it began and how quickly it changed.

Ask what the target is, how breathing motion will be managed, how many visits are expected, which symptoms require immediate contact, and why this approach is preferred over Whole Brain Radiotherapy or Brain Tumour Surgery when those treatments are relevant.
