What should you know about std that cause bleeding between periods?

Some sexually transmitted infections can inflame the cervix, making light bleeding more likely between periods or after sex. Chlamydia may have few or no noticeable symptoms, so bleeding alone cannot identify its cause. Cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, womb conditions and hormonal changes can also lead to unexpected bleeding. A symptom is not a diagnosis, and testing is the way to clarify whether an infection is present.

Arrange a sexual-health or gynaecology assessment for new bleeding, especially after unprotected sex or with unusual discharge, pelvic pain or pain during sex. Testing may involve a urine sample, vaginal swab or cervical examination. Avoid sex or use condoms until results and treatment advice are clear, and tell recent partners if an infection is diagnosed so they can seek testing. Do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, fever or feeling very unwell. Pregnancy with bleeding or pain also needs prompt assessment. Bleeding after sex or bleeding that keeps returning should be reviewed even when it is light, because cervical and womb causes need consideration.

Ask which infections and non-infectious causes should be checked, when results will be ready, and whether partners need testing. Ask when sex can safely resume and what follow-up is needed if bleeding continues after treatment.
