Skin peeling on hands: what should you know?

Short answer
Skin peeling on the hands often follows irritation or dryness, but infection, inflammation, and a burn can also cause the outer skin to shed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Wet work, detergents, and repeated washing can weaken the skin barrier.
- Skin care
- Use gentle cleansing and a thick fragrance-free moisturiser.
- Prompt review
- Pus, fever, red streaks, or severe pain need medical attention.
What may be behind the peeling
Frequent handwashing, detergents, solvents, cold air, and repeated wet work can damage the skin barrier. Itchy redness or cracks may fit hand dermatitis, while peeling between the toes or on the soles raises the possibility of Athlete's Foot. Psoriasis can produce sharply defined, thick, scaly areas and may affect other sites. Sunburn can peel after painful redness. The pattern, itch, pain, blisters, and exposure history help separate these possibilities.
Peeling skin is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. A clinician may inspect the nails, palms, finger webs, and other skin, particularly when the problem keeps returning or affects both hands.
Protect the hands
Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry carefully between the fingers. Apply a thick bland moisturiser after washing and before sleep. Wear protective gloves for cleaning, with cotton liners if sweating is a problem, and avoid pulling loose skin. Stop new soaps, sanitisers, fragrances, and harsh products one at a time when possible. Do not use a steroid or antifungal cream on cracked skin without advice if the diagnosis is uncertain.
When medical review is needed
Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, red streaks, severe pain, fever, deep cracks, or loss of movement. Urgent assessment is also needed if peeling follows a chemical exposure, significant burn, or widespread rash, or if the eyes, mouth, or genitals are involved. Arrange a routine appointment when peeling persists, spreads, bleeds, or repeatedly returns despite gentle care.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits dermatitis, Athlete's Foot, Psoriasis, Sunburn, or another cause; whether a skin sample is useful; and which moisturiser or medicine suits your hands. Mention your work, cleaning products, glove use, hobbies, and any peeling elsewhere.

Questions people ask
Should I pull off peeling skin?
No. Let loose skin shed naturally and keep the area moisturised to reduce further cracking.
Can hand peeling be fungal?
It can be, especially with scaling or itching elsewhere on the feet, but examination is needed to choose treatment.
