What should you know about statins for angina?

Angina happens when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood, often because the coronary arteries are narrowed. A statin works mainly in the liver to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and can help slow the build-up of fatty material in artery walls. It is a preventive medicine, so its benefit is not the same as the rapid relief provided by a prescribed treatment for an angina episode.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and do not stop it because you feel well; prevention usually has no immediate sensation. Tell the prescriber about all medicines, supplements, and any history of liver disease. Report unexplained muscle pain, weakness, marked tiredness, or dark urine promptly, especially if symptoms are severe. A clinician may arrange blood tests to check how your body is responding and adjust the medicine if needed.

Keep any agreed plan for blood pressure, movement, food choices, and smoking support. Statins do not treat every cause of chest discomfort, and an ECG or another assessment may be needed when symptoms change.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure, squeezing, or tightness that is severe, lasts longer than expected, occurs at rest, or comes with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Do not wait for a statin to work; it is not an emergency-relief medicine. If your usual angina pattern becomes more frequent, lasts longer, or is triggered by less activity, contact a clinician urgently for a new assessment.
