What should you know about start of mumps?

Mumps is a contagious viral infection that can inflame the salivary glands. Swelling near the jaw or in front of the ears may make the face look fuller and chewing or swallowing uncomfortable. Fever and swollen glands can occur, but these findings also have other causes. Mumps presents with this cheek or jaw swelling; the presence of swelling alone does not establish mumps.

Some people have mild or no obvious symptoms, while others feel generally unwell. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets and saliva, especially during close contact. Tell a clinician if there has been contact with a suspected case or if routine vaccination is incomplete.

Contact a GP before attending in person so the practice can reduce exposure to others. Rest, drink fluids and choose foods that are easy to chew if the jaw is sore. Do not share drinks, cutlery or towels, and follow advice about staying away from school, work or group settings.

A GP consultation can review the symptoms and decide whether testing or further care is needed. Ask about MMR vaccination records; vaccination protects against mumps but does not replace assessment after a possible exposure.

Seek emergency help for severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, a seizure, trouble breathing or swallowing, severe abdominal or testicular pain, or sudden hearing change. Seek prompt clinical advice for worsening swelling, dehydration, persistent fever or severe pain.

Ask whether isolation is needed, which symptoms require urgent help, whether close contacts need advice, and whether your MMR vaccination record is complete.
