What should you know about stand up mri scanner?

MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed pictures without ionising radiation. An upright or open-position system changes how the body is positioned during selected images. That may help a team assess anatomy under load or accommodate someone who finds a narrow enclosed scanner difficult. The machine design, image quality and body regions available vary between centres.

The scanner still requires you to remain still while images are taken. Metal objects and some implanted devices can be unsafe or affect the images. Some examinations use contrast medicine, which requires a separate safety review.

Tell the imaging team about implants, metal fragments, a pacemaker, kidney problems, pregnancy or a previous reaction to contrast. Remove jewellery and follow instructions about clothing, food and medicines. Ask whether your requested body area can be examined on the available upright system and whether a conventional MRI would provide more suitable images. Arrange help if anxiety, pain or balance problems make standing difficult.

Report new breathing trouble, swelling, widespread rash or feeling faint immediately after contrast, using the centre's emergency instructions. Contact the imaging service if you develop a concerning symptom after leaving or if you were unable to complete the examination. The scan itself does not explain a symptom or confirm cancer; a radiologist interprets the images and sends a report to the requesting clinician.
