Stages of Trichomoniasis: What to Know

Some people have no noticeable symptoms. Others develop vaginal itching, burning, soreness, discomfort when urinating or during sex, or discharge that looks different from usual and may have an unusual smell. Symptoms can come and go, so feeling better does not confirm that the infection has gone. Similar symptoms can have other causes, and appearance alone cannot diagnose trichomoniasis.

Testing may involve a sample from the vagina or urine, depending on the service. Tell the clinician about recent sexual contacts, pregnancy and any previous treatment so they can choose appropriate testing and advice.

Take the prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the course. Avoid sex until treatment instructions say it is safe, and ensure current sexual partners are assessed and treated when advised; otherwise infection can pass back and forth. Use condoms consistently afterward to reduce the chance of transmission. Do not use scented washes or douche products, which can irritate vaginal tissue.

Arrange follow-up if symptoms remain, return or occur during pregnancy. A clinician can advise whether repeat testing is needed and whether other sexually transmitted infections should be checked.

Arrange prompt assessment for new vaginal discharge, itching, pelvic discomfort, pain during sex or burning with urination, especially after a new sexual contact. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding or feeling suddenly very unwell. Pregnant people should contact their maternity team about suspected infection rather than delaying evaluation.
