Short answer

The stage before menopause is the menopause transition, when ovarian hormone patterns change and periods, symptoms, sleep and mood may become less predictable.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the transition

Before menopause is complete, periods may become closer together, farther apart, lighter or heavier. Ovulation can become irregular, but pregnancy remains possible while periods continue. Hormone fluctuations may contribute to Hot Flushes, Night Sweats, Menopausal Mood Changes, Low Sex Drive or Vaginal Dryness.

The transition does not follow one fixed timetable. Symptoms can appear before periods stop, and different symptoms may come and go. Periods Stopped is a symptom description, not a stand-alone explanation; pregnancy, thyroid conditions, medication and other causes can also alter bleeding.

Ways to prepare and cope

Keep a record of bleeding, sleep, temperature symptoms, mood, headaches and medicines. Regular movement, strength training, a steady sleep routine, breathable clothing and attention to hydration may make daily life easier. Use contraception if pregnancy is not wanted until a clinician confirms it is no longer needed.

Book an appointment if symptoms affect work, relationships or sleep. Discuss non-hormonal options, menopausal hormone therapy, vaginal treatments and screening needs in the context of your health history.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, very heavy bleeding, persistent pelvic pain or symptoms that begin suddenly. Bleeding after menopause needs assessment. Urgent care is needed for fainting, severe pain, soaking bleeding or possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Pelvic Organ Prolapse symptoms such as pressure or a bulge also warrant review.

Questions for your doctor

Could my cycle changes be part of the menopause transition? Do I need a pregnancy test, blood tests or another examination? Which symptom treatments fit my medical history? What bleeding pattern is concerning, and how long should I use contraception?

Questions people ask

Can menopause symptoms start before periods stop?

Yes. Symptoms such as temperature changes, sleep disruption, mood changes and vaginal dryness can occur during the transition.

Does an irregular period prove menopause is starting?

No. Pregnancy, thyroid problems, medicines and other conditions can also change periods, so the pattern should be interpreted in context.
