Stage 4 lung cancer with bone metastases: life expectancy

Stage 4 means the lung cancer has travelled beyond its original area. Bone metastases can weaken bone, cause pain, and sometimes affect the spine or calcium balance. A scan may show where cancer is present, but it cannot by itself tell one person exactly how long they will live. The pathology report, molecular findings, symptoms, activity level, and treatment response help the oncology team discuss an outlook.

Ask whether testing identifies a treatment target and which combination of systemic treatment, bone-strengthening therapy, or palliative radiotherapy fits your situation. Cancer pain management can address pain early, alongside treatment for the cancer. Gentle movement and a tailored plan can protect function, but new pain should be assessed before strenuous activity.

Contact the cancer team urgently for new severe back or neck pain, leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can signal pressure on the spinal cord. Seek immediate help for confusion, marked thirst, repeated vomiting, or severe weakness, which may reflect a high calcium level or another complication.
