Stage 4 Lung Cancer and Oxygen Levels

A pulse oximeter estimates the oxygen carried in your blood. A lower reading can occur when a tumour, fluid around the lung, infection, airway narrowing or a blood clot interferes with breathing. Cold fingers, movement, nail products and an imperfect fit can also affect the result. Your symptoms, breathing rate, medical history and repeated readings matter alongside the device number.

Stage 4 lung cancer may involve the lungs or other parts of the body, including the brain; the extent and treatment plan differ between people. Sit upright, rest, warm your hand and repeat a concerning reading as directed by your clinical team. Record the time, reading, activity and symptoms. Use prescribed oxygen exactly as instructed; changing the flow yourself can be unsafe. Treatment may address the cause, such as infection, fluid, airway obstruction or cancer activity. Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, inability to speak comfortably or marked drowsiness.
