Stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to the liver

Liver metastasis is a deposit of lung cancer in the liver, not a new primary liver cancer. Some people have no liver-related symptoms. Others may develop tiredness, reduced appetite, nausea, discomfort under the right ribs, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or itching. These symptoms can also have non-cancer causes, so they do not identify the cause on their own.

Clinicians use scans, blood tests, the lung cancer subtype, molecular features, and overall health to plan care. Genomic tumour profiling may identify features that influence systemic treatment. The liver's function and whether cancer is present elsewhere also matter when discussing goals and expected benefit.

Share appetite changes, abdominal discomfort, bowel changes, or yellowing with the oncology team. Treatment may target cancer throughout the body, and radiotherapy or another local approach may sometimes help a specific troublesome area. Medicines can support nausea, pain, itching, nutrition, and sleep. Palliative care can work alongside cancer treatment to improve comfort and help with practical and emotional needs.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly increasing abdominal pain, confusion, unusual sleepiness, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, new bleeding, fever during treatment, or rapidly worsening yellow skin or eyes. Contact the cancer team promptly about new jaundice, marked swelling, or a sudden decline in eating or activity.
