What should you know about stage 4 liver cancer?

Staging describes the extent of cancer and helps the team compare treatment options. Your plan also depends on liver function, the number and position of tumours, whether cancer is elsewhere, symptoms, and your overall health. Liver cancer may arise in different cell types, so the pathology and scan findings matter.

Options can include medicines such as immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Liver resection or tumour ablation may help selected people when the location and remaining liver function make a local treatment suitable. These procedures are not appropriate for every stage 4 situation.

Ask the team to explain the treatment goal, expected visits, monitoring, and possible effects on liver function. Tell them about alcohol use, viral hepatitis, diabetes, blood thinners, herbal products, and every prescription or non-prescription medicine. Track appetite, weight changes, abdominal swelling, pain, itching, sleep, and alertness.

Supportive care can address nausea, pain, itching, nutrition, fatigue, and emotional stress while cancer treatment is being considered or given. A dietitian, palliative-care clinician, nurse, or social worker may be part of this support.

Call your care team promptly for increasing yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, worsening abdominal swelling, fever, persistent vomiting, new confusion, unusual bleeding, or pain that is difficult to control. Seek emergency care for vomiting blood, black stools, severe drowsiness, fainting, or sudden severe abdominal pain.
