What should you know about stage 4 kidney cancer?

The stage describes where kidney cancer is found, not how you will feel on a particular day. It may involve nearby structures, lymph nodes, or organs farther from the kidney. Your team reviews scans, biopsy or laboratory findings when available, kidney function, symptoms, and general health before recommending a plan.

Treatment can include medicines that travel through the bloodstream, such as immunotherapy or targeted therapy. Surgery to remove a kidney, or a procedure that treats a selected tumour area, may be considered for carefully chosen situations. The aim may be to shrink or slow cancer, manage a troublesome area, or preserve comfort and function.

Ask for a written treatment plan that names the goal of each treatment, how it is given, and which symptoms should be reported. Keep a record of medicines, blood pressure readings if requested, pain, appetite, urine changes, and new symptoms. Tell the team about kidney problems, other conditions, and medicines or supplements before treatment begins.

Supportive and palliative care can be added alongside cancer treatment. It can help with pain, tiredness, nausea, appetite, sleep, emotional strain, and practical planning. It does not mean that cancer treatment has stopped.

Contact your oncology team promptly for blood in the urine, much less urine, worsening swelling, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, fever, confusion, or pain that is not controlled. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, sudden weakness, a new seizure, or a sudden change in speech or alertness.

Which areas has the cancer reached, and what is the goal of treatment? Do I need genomic or other tumour testing? How will you monitor kidney function and treatment effects? Which symptoms should lead me to call the clinic the same day? Would nephrectomy, tumour ablation, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy have a role for me?
