Stage 4 colon cancer

Colon cancer may travel through the bloodstream or lymphatic system to organs such as the liver or lungs. The number, size, and position of distant areas, along with bowel function and general health, shape the plan. Some people have disease concentrated in one organ, while others have several affected areas. A scan result is interpreted with biopsy findings, blood tests, and the pattern of symptoms rather than in isolation.

The team may discuss medicine that treats cancer throughout the body, surgery for the bowel or selected liver deposits, radiotherapy for a specific problem, or a staged combination. Genomic tumour profiling can identify tumour features that may guide medicine choices. If the bowel is narrowed or blocked, a bowel resection or stoma surgery may be considered. Ask what each option is intended to achieve and how recovery may affect daily life.

Get urgent help for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy rectal bleeding, fainting, or fever with chills. These can signal obstruction, bleeding, infection, or another problem needing prompt assessment.
