What should you know about stage 3B NSCLC?

NSCLC includes several lung cancers, such as adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Stage 3B describes spread within the chest rather than distant spread to organs elsewhere. The exact staging depends on the tumour’s size, nearby structures involved and which lymph nodes contain cancer. Imaging and tissue testing help the team define these details.

Your pathology report may also describe biomarkers. These findings can affect whether immunotherapy or targeted therapy is suitable. Stage is one part of the picture; tumour biology, lung function, other health conditions and your priorities also shape the plan.

A lung cancer team may review scans, biopsy results, breathing tests and fitness for treatment. Depending on the findings, treatment can combine chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy. Targeted therapy may be considered when the tumour has a matching molecular change. Surgery is less often suitable at this stage, but an operation such as a lung lobectomy can be discussed when the tumour pattern and overall health allow it.

Ask for the purpose and order of each treatment, how response will be checked, and which symptoms should be reported between visits. A written medication list and support for stopping tobacco, if relevant, can make appointments more productive.

Contact your oncology team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, fever, confusion or difficulty staying awake. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, sudden weakness, a new seizure or chest pain that does not settle. These symptoms need assessment regardless of how long ago the cancer was diagnosed.
