Stage 3A lung cancer: what to know

Stage 3A usually describes lung cancer that has reached nearby structures or lymph nodes on a particular side of the chest, without confirmed distant spread on staging tests. The label covers several patterns, so the exact scan and pathology findings matter. Lung cancer may be non-small-cell or small-cell, and this distinction changes treatment discussions.

Staging can involve chest imaging, tests of lymph nodes, and selected scans outside the chest. Genomic tumour profiling may identify changes that help guide medicine choices. A hoarse voice can have several causes; it should be assessed in context rather than treated as proof of cancer spread.

A multidisciplinary team may consider chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery such as a lung lobectomy, or combinations of these. The sequence depends on whether the tumour can be removed, its location, lung function, scan findings, and the person's ability to tolerate treatment.

Bring breathing history, smoking history, medicines, and previous scan reports to appointments. Ask how treatment goals will be measured, what side effects need early reporting, and whether supportive or palliative care could help with symptoms alongside cancer-directed treatment.

Call the treatment team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, fever, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or a sudden decline in strength. These symptoms can have treatment-related or non-cancer causes, but they need timely assessment.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, blue lips, new weakness on one side, or sudden trouble speaking. New neurological symptoms deserve urgent evaluation because brain metastases are one possible cause among several.
