Stage 3 lung cancer treatment: what to know

Stage 3 includes different patterns of tumour size and nearby lymph-node involvement. The team considers whether the cancer is small-cell or non-small-cell, where it sits, how well the lungs work and whether molecular or immune features are present.

Some people may be assessed for Lung Lobectomy. Others may be offered Radiotherapy with systemic treatment, or a plan focused on symptoms and daily function. Palliative Care can be introduced alongside cancer treatment.

Ask whether Genomic Tumour Profiling is appropriate and whether more imaging or tissue testing is needed. Bring a medicine list, allergies, previous treatment details and questions about breathing, work and home support.

Request a clear plan covering treatment sequence, appointments, expected side effects and a contact number. Ask how response will be monitored and what may happen if the first plan changes.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, fainting, new confusion, a seizure or coughing up a large amount of blood. During treatment, call promptly about fever, chills, uncontrolled vomiting, sudden weakness or rapid decline.
